Kye-Mhon Bridge, West side of Mandalay Moat, Myanmar

Shwekyimyint Pagoda - the oldest Pagoda in Mandalay.

Shwekyimyint Pagoda is situated fairly near to the south-west corner of the Moat in Mandalay. It is sort of tucked away on 24th Road between 82nd and 83rd street so actually easy to locate because of Mandalays' grid road system. Perhaps because it is not up by the Hill at the main tourist area it seems many tourists do not find there way to this the oldest Pagoda in the city, however it is certainly well worth a visit. The Pagoda was built in 1167 by exciled Prince Min Shin Saw who was the eldest son of King Alaungsithu of the Pagan dynasty of Burma.

The complex contains several beautiful Pavilions and is set in nicely paved courtyards. The original Buddha images were consecrated by the Prince himself and include a huge reclining Buddha as well as many small images - often in god and silver and adorned in precious stones. The walls inside in the temple are painted with country scenes i.e. waterfalls and trees. There is an unusual dumpy small white stupa which has gold decorations and a gold Hti - a small Buddha image sits inside a niche.

Also near to this stupa there is a sacred pole around the bottom part of which are carvings of couple of excellent green serpents and of two Buddha images.
There are many other Buddha images which have been collected over the years and some of which were originally located at the Royal Pace - these are apparently available for public view on special occasions.
